Not Lame

We hope you all had a great Christmas/Holidays. We hope you were surrounded by people you love and care for, and shared some cheer. (In other words, we hope you didn't spend your holidays like Rich, half convulsing and kneeling in front of Mr. Whirly)

Anyway, back on topic - the Not Lame Top Indie Power Pop Releases of 2006 are up, and Supraluxe is on the list.

The Hang Ups

We've been wanting to do an occasional feature on Minneapolis bands. Thought we'd call it The Sound of Minneapolis, but decided that's a stupid title. Maybe a theme, no title. Anyway there's a lot of brilliant music made here, you know. One of the best, if not THE best, bands we have ever heard was the Hang Ups. A classic album of theirs was So We Go, sort of a Sgt Pepper for pencilneck introverts. Not that we would know anything about that.

A review of it at Delusions of Adequacy pretty much says everything we wanted to say about it, only a lot more eloquently.

* You can find the review here

* You can listen to samples and buy it here

We're not going to tell you to run out and buy it, cause we realize it's not for everyone. But these guys are on our all-time favorites list, and that list is pretty short.

Boom goes the dynamite

Sorry, I just had to post this - I kind of have a theme going.

These bad things just blow in.

This may or may not be real, I don't know. But it's a RIOT regardless.

Update: This is apparently very real - a student broadcast from WOUB in Ohio.

Christmas 2006 with Supraluxe

It didn't seem weird until somebody else said it....

I was chatting up the checker guy at the local Kowalski's today - we talked about energy drinks, we both like Monster. I like the blue ones, he likes green. We talked about the bad flavored drinks; I said I can't stand Tab because it tastes like sweet liquid celery, and he said he hates Blue Ox. Then he told me he bought a Blue Ox again because he wanted to know if it was as bad as he remembered. I've done that - bought stuff I know I don't like just to experience the ick again. Like Zero Bars. I never really thought about why, but figured it was so inconsequential that I never mentioned it to anyone. I guess that's what blogs are for.

Not Top Ten

We have achieved Honorable Mention status, which puts us somewhere between 11 and infinity.

Stop The &%$#'in Presses!

Remember how back in November our Amazon sales rank was #236,946? Well somebody must have bought a copy because we leapfrogged 126,993 other CDs to move up to #109,953. Now if one more person buys a copy we'll move up another 126,993 places to number...... +17,040! We'd have to actually stop selling CDs to move back to #1. This whole commerce thing is a piece of cake.

How 'bout a little George Winston to go with that National Geographic?

On the turntable

The first reviewer's comments about this CD at Amazon are pretty funny! Especially considering how amazingly cool it is.

Update: I've been listening to this non-stop today. There are so many beautiful moments, but about 2:45 into the song "Good News" if I close my eyes the visual imagery is so strong it feels like I'm dreaming. So cool.

We make an appearance on the latest Get Jacked podcast, "Better Living Through Chemicals". You may want to take a guess as to which song of ours they chose. You only get one.

Who Are These Guys?

Well, it’s the holidays and you know what that means. Relatives. We here at Supraluxe have lots of relatives… most of them we know of. When these guys showed up, we were in a bit of denial. Ladies and Gentleman…

I do not understand...

Lift is attained by airflow over the wings as a result of the forward motion created by the engines. This is motion relative to the surrounding air, not relative to the treadmill. Also, what's with the wheel rotation argument?

Like one poster said, time to start taking away voting rights.

Ask Dr. Science!

I was once in a band with a guy who, as an adult and in all seriousness, said he didn't understand how it was possible that bathtub farts could smell. That band didn't last very long.

The Current top albums, 2006

The Current has listed the staff picks for Top Albums of 2006. Oddly, Supraluxe does not show up on anyone's list. A clerical error, I'm sure.

You, loyal reader, have an opportunity to set things straight by voting for Supraluxe on the listener favorite albums 2006 page. Voting ends this Friday, so like they say in Chicago - vote early and often.

Memo to share holders

In the interest of time, Supraluxe has decided to bypass fledging band status and will be proceeding to superstar status. As such, the following will need to be provided at practices and performances from now on as per contractual agreements:

1. Champagne to dip our testicles in. (It's wonderful....really...you should try it!)
2. Female genital casts molded from the finest bavarian chococate (Honestly......why separate two of life's greatest pleasures!)
3. Golden drum sticks forged of lightning from the almightly hand of Thor
4. High colonic bags filled with Remy-Martin
5. Chicks. Lots of chicks. Special requests from Bob (keyboards) include larger boned woman from the Wisconsin state college system. Leg warmers and tall hair a must.
6. 84 back up Charvel Shredders for road gigs
7. Cocaine pancakes each Sunday

Thank you for your continued backing and support.

Sincerely,

The band

On the turntable

Two great ones today. In the car today The Current played their My Three Songs segment at noon and the winning entry played Mr. Blue Sky by ELO, A Day In The Life by, um, some band, and Everyone's a VIP to Someone by The Go! Team. I was pretty blown away by VIP - I was sure it was Ennio Morricone.

Next up is Bluebird Is Dead by ELO, from On The Third Day. The original is standard issue Beatles-Lite, but on a Jeff Lynne tribute album Todd Rundgren stripped it down and rebuilt it into a psychedelic ice sculpture extravaganza. Unfortunately the clip doesn't really do it justice. Plus it helps if you like Todd.
